This is a collection of quotes from Stoic philosophers. I read one page each day for a year and enjoyed some of the ideas exposed.
The formatting of this book isn't the best, though. It's too short to completely immerse myself in; reading more would have felt like I wasn't reflecting enough.
My Notes
Stoicism was a school of philosophy founded in Athens by Zeno of Citium in the early third century BC.
Its name is derived from the Greek stoa, meaning porch (where Zeno first taught his students).
The philosophy asserts that virtue is happiness, and it is our perceptions of things—rather than the things themselves—that cause most of our troubles.
Stoicism is based on three main disciplines through which we can find mental clarity.
- The Discipline of Perception (how we see and perceive the world around us)
- The Discipline of Action (the decisions and actions we take—and to what end)
- The Discipline of Will (how we deal with the things we cannot change, attain clear and convincing judgement, and come to a true understanding of our place in the world)
